Warmup followed by some break-fall practice on the mats. Moved on to forward roll and backward rolls (on the mats as well). The class separated into those with kumite gear and those without, and those with (incl me) did a few rounds of light kumite having to stay within the wrestling ring printed on the mats.

Class with Miriam. Stretch and our respective requirements. Took a little tangent into Myo Sim Kendo and went over the three basic drawing techniques and the blocks available with the up-draw/down-strike.
After a break during which we got into armor, we had 18 one-on-one matches. I did the first 9 two-handed, the second 9 one-handed.

Class with Bryce and Miriam. Stretch and requirements. Study session on The Tradition. After the break, we had a total of 50 1-on-1 sparring matches. I swapped around between 2H (HNH), 1H, and full 2H longsword to give them different styles of opponents.
-
Class with Miriam. Stretch and full through our respective requirements. After a break, we got in 15 1-on-1 matches.
-
Class with Bryce and Miriam. Stretch, reviewed Miriam’s requirements, and worked with Bryce on his 13th move (“defense chop”) and a new move for him, The Samurai, which we adapted for his one hand style. We all reviewed The Mantis a bit and then took a break. In the second half we got in 30 one-on-one matches total.

Warmup and kihon, including a technique new to me. I missed the name, but it is a palmed scooping motion described as “slapping water” and similar to the leg sweep in Basai. Second half was kumite related drills, working on evasions, defenses, and light kumite, and finishing with dealing with one handed or two handed grabs from the front.
-
Class with Jesse and Bryce. Stretch and requirements (I paired them, jesse doing second style white rope reqs, and I soloed). We did some additional drilling on Mantis to keep working on the updated leg cut.
During the break Bryce and I geared up and in the second half we started with sparring (Jesse marshaling). We only got in 5 matches and then Bryce pulled his shoulder. We wrapped up class with Balance 1 & 2 (myself and Bryce still in armor).
-
Class with Bryce. Stretch and our respective full requirements. Worked a bit more on Kata Ni. We got into gear during the break and had 23 one-on-one matches. I started 2H, but my bokken split after just several matches, so then I went 1H. Later, I had Bryce pick up his punch shield and I went sword and dagger.
-
Class with Chris. Stretch and our respective requirements. We did a focus session on the modified Whispering Wind for him. After the break, we got in 21 one-on-one matches. I did 12 2-handed, 6 with my longsword, and the last 3 with 1-hander.

Class with Jesse, Bryce, Miriam, and Ben. Stretch and requirements. As a class we reviewed The Mantis. After the break, we had a number of 1-on-1 matches, focusing on trying to get Miriam and Ben more sparring matches, though Jesse and I did a few steel matches as well.
Conditions were intermittent rain, around 40 degrees.
-
Class with Bryce and Chris. Shamay observed for their first night. Requirements for them, I reviewed Bryce and then worked with Chris on reviewing Kata Ich and teaching Cutting Pattern 2. As a class, we did a study on Double Chop, a new move for Chris. After the break we had sparring, a total of 26 matches (myself 20).
-
Class with Jesse, Chris, Miriam, and Ben. Stretch and requirements. I paired them with each other and quickly reviewed my Silver Chain requirements solo, interjecting as needed. I worked a little extra with Miriam on The Tradition, then as a class we worked on Dragons Tail, a new move for Miriam, Ben, and Jesse. For Jesse in particular, I went over a standing variation.
During a break, we put on our protective gear and then got in a total 31 matches in the second half. (including a single steel match for Jesse and I)
-
Class with Jesse, Rakta Nadi, Chris, Miriam, and Ben. Requirements (I reviewed Ben and Miriam individually), and then a class study session on The Mantis. After the break, we had sparring. There was a shortage of protective gear, so we had to be slightly creative passing it around. I started with reviewing Ben and Miriam in armored parry, finishing with 3 matches of light sparring for each of them. Between sets with them, Jesse and I had steel matches. Rakta Nadi got the gear next and I and Jesse gave him matches, followed by finally Chris getting his set of matches.
Total of 49 matches logged for the night (34 with me, 16 of which were steel)
(I was switching between regular 2-handed, * 1-handed, and ** sword+dagger)
(My chest strap heart monitor logged 1982 calorie burn over the 3 hour class, max 183bpm, avg 145bpm) -
Class with Jesse B, Bryce, Miriam, Ben, and Derek started tonight. After the stretch, I paired Miriam with Bryce, Ben with Jesse, and I instructed Derek on Defensive Stance, Head Cut, and Neck Cut. I also took time to review Cutting Pattern 1 with each of Miriam and Ben. As a class, we did a study of The I Move again, a new move for Ben and Derek. After the break we had 33 one on one matches.
Conditions were intermittent rain torrents.
-
Class with Jesse B, Risa, and Miriam. Derek observed their second class. Stretch and requirements, and then a focus on Thorn again. After the break, Jesse and I had 5 bokken matches and 10 steel matches, then we left our armor on for the remainder (except helmet and mitts). We discussed some of the lessons observed in the sparring, then the class did 100 continuous full circle cuts (Jesse and I with steel), then a few rounds of Refined Strikes.
-
Class with Jesse B, Bryce, Miriam, and Ben. Stretch and requirements, placed Jesse and Bryce together while I worked with Miriam and Ben. Instructed Miriam on Head Block, and Ben on Decap Cut. After requirements, we all reviewed Jumping Tiger 1 some more. We got gear on during the break and Jesse, Bryce, and I had a total of 24 one on matches amongst us.
-
Class with Jesse B, Bryce, and Miriam. Ben had their second observation. Stretch and requirements, paired Jesse and Bryce while I worked with Miriam. We reviewed her current techniques and I instructed her on Decap and Leg full circle cuts. I also worked with Jesse B on Cutting Pattern 3 more. We then all reviewed Jumping Tiger 1, including instructing Miriam on it. After the break, during which we geared up, we had a number of one-on-one matches, and then finished with three multi-opponent matches.
-
Class with Jesse B and Chris. Miriyam observed class. Stretch and had Jesse and Chris go through requirements, then took Chris aside and administered his Green Braid Evaluation. We then reviewed Thorn for a bit before taking a break. After the break, we had a total of 28 1-on-1 matches.
Conditions ranged from moist to hard rain throughout the class, though footing in the dojo was fine, it hasn’t been continuously wet enough to get overly soggy yet, plus the opened up main space provides a better quality hardpack.
-
Class with Jesse B and Chris. Stretch and observed them going through their respective requirements together. Study session on Jumping Tiger 2. During the break, got our sparring gear on and then had 24 total matches (Jesse and I using steel, and I used my one hander for all matches).
-
Class with Jesse B, Risa, and Chris. Stretch and requirements (Risa with Chris, myself with Jesse). Continued drilling The Tradition some more, working to build up that reflex and muscle memory. After the break, we had a total of 34 one on one matches. Jesse and I sparred each other with steel. I alternated sets of two handed and one handed. The temperature was somewhere in the 80s, which made for hot sweaty sparring, still pretty reasonable for mid summer.
