Training Journal

A journal of my martial arts training

Tag: all weather

  • I hosted a Day of Combat at the Mt Hood White River East SnoPark at 4200ft elevation. It was a just about as perfect as it gets, with mostly overcast and a fresh couple inches of snow from the night before on top of a deep base. The around 20F degree temp meant no rain, just some occasional light snow flurries.

Sparring participants were myself, Honorary Kaiden Dalton, Jesse B, Ferocitas, Bryce, Rakta Nadi, Chris, Miriam, and Aaliyah. Anne was an immense help in support capacity, logging matches and helping with gear.

    All sparring was bokken.

We logged 9 last-standing melees, a couple 3v3v3 team melees, a 3v5 upper vs lower melee, a 4v5 with trainees as captains, and a 4v5 VIP protection melee (myself and dalton as non-combat VIPs).

We wrapped up with 45 1-on-1 matches (best-of-3 format).

  • Final class of 2024, with Jesse, Bryce, Rakta Nadi, Aaliyah, Miriam, and Ben. Stretch and requirements, than we worked on The Tradition (a new move for Aaliyah). After the break, we did 100 continuous full circle cuts (jesse and I with 2H steel), a few rounds of Refined Strikes, and then a round of Blind Man’s Boffer. We finished out with and extended Balance 1 & 2 course.

After class I turned out the lights and Ben, Miriam, and I did a bit more of the Balance course in the near dark.

Conditions: intermittent rain, pretty muddy and mucky

  • Class with Jesse, Bryce, Miriam, and Ben. Stretch and requirements. As a class we reviewed The Mantis. After the break, we had a number of 1-on-1 matches, focusing on trying to get Miriam and Ben more sparring matches, though Jesse and I did a few steel matches as well.

Conditions were intermittent rain, around 40 degrees.

  • Class with Jesse B, Bryce, Miriam, Ben, and Derek started tonight. After the stretch, I paired Miriam with Bryce, Ben with Jesse, and I instructed Derek on Defensive Stance, Head Cut, and Neck Cut. I also took time to review Cutting Pattern 1 with each of Miriam and Ben. As a class, we did a study of The I Move again, a new move for Ben and Derek. After the break we had 33 one on one matches.

    Conditions were intermittent rain torrents.

  • Class with Jesse B and Chris. Miriyam observed class. Stretch and had Jesse and Chris go through requirements, then took Chris aside and administered his Green Braid Evaluation. We then reviewed Thorn for a bit before taking a break. After the break, we had a total of 28 1-on-1 matches.

Conditions ranged from moist to hard rain throughout the class, though footing in the dojo was fine, it hasn’t been continuously wet enough to get overly soggy yet, plus the opened up main space provides a better quality hardpack.

  • Class with Risa and Chris. Stretch and requirements. I reviewed Chris first, then paired Risa with Chris to go through their requirements while I soloed mine. We took some time to do a focus session on The Mantis then took a break. We started the second half with 100 continuous full circle cuts, then a few rounds of Refined Strikes. Finished with Balance 1 & 2.

It was a steady rain all class with a good bit of soggy, mushy areas throughout the dojo making for uncertain footing.

  • Class with Bryce. Stretch and White Rope requirements (myself matching, one handed). We then did some focus work on Akira and Thorn.

After the break, we had 30 one-on-one matches with some variety of weapons. Both started one-handed (9 matches), then sword and buckler (9 matches), then he returned to single one-handed and I went two hand axe (6), and the last set I went back to single one-handed as well (6).

Conditions ranged from light rain to spritz.

  • Class with Chris. Stretch and one through our respective requirements. Instructed him on Dragons Tail. Got in armor and had 20 of 1-on-1 matches. Spates of medium to heavy rain, muddy unstable footing conditions.

  • Class with Rakta Nadi. Stretch and White Rope requirements for both of us (myself with steel, all night except where noted). Did some focus work on Kata Ich. Break. Stance and movement drilling, 100 Full Circle Cuts, a few rounds of Refined Strikes against the targets (boken), and finished with some ad-hoc sequence creation.

    Conditions: intermittent light rain

  • Class with Sal, Steven, Joshua and Jesse. Charlie observed due to personal injury, Chris called out. Stretch and requirements once through, then I went over Jumping Tiger 1 (a new move for Joshua and Jesse). After a break, we had one on one sparring in the rain and mud (altered terrain, all weather).
