Training Journal

A journal of my martial arts training

  • More straight offense and offensive evasion and counter.

I also performed a light staff dance to Nightwish’s “Bye bye Beautiful”.

  • Continuing to try and retrain my reaction for straight offense and aggressive defense, including evasive maneuvering instead of linear retreat.

  • Focused on straight offense and offensive defense, working on furthering my alternate combat style, aggressive and in-close vs my default defensive and distanced.

  • Evening jog/walk 1 mile with the dog. I didn’t plan well for this, ate a large dinner and despite a couple hours or so passing, still got bad cramping that limited my pace.

  • 3×3 Tabata set: Lunge w/ medicine ball, box/riser hop, high knees

  • Worked on my straight offense using one of my target dummies to include good distancing and targeting. Working mostly 1 handed with my hand-and-a-half bokken right now, I’m pretty concerned about the tendonitis in my left elbow, so I’m doing what I can to reduce strain on it.

  • Continued to work on straight offense and evasive offense. Also got in 25 gambit passes.

  • Worked more on my straight offense, and on my defensive evasion.

  • Class with Rakta Nadi and Bryce tonight, shifted from Thurs to Monday due to conflicts. Stretch and had them pair for requirements while I observed. We then worked on Cutting Pattern 2 a bit more, myself pairing with each of them, and then did some focus on Mantis. After a break, we had one on one sparring matches, myself 15 with each of them, and a total of 43 for the night.

I challenged both Rakta Nadi and Bryce to 10 matches, but I did not achieve my 8 cathan goal with either. I need to continue working on retraining my defensive retreat into lateral offensive evasion, as well as improving my ability to strike between/around the defense.

Turns out Mondays work for Bryce now, and they are good for Rakta Nadi, so we’ll be shifting to Mondays as of the 28th.

  • 1 mile run/walk @ 11m11s (1620 steps)

  • 4×3 Tabata set: hip pop (10lbs), crunches, reverse lunges (6lbs), mountain climbers

  • Reviewed my silver chain requirements, and spent time on some of the noted weak points, as well as more straight offense work.

  • Worked on my straight offense moves.

  • 4×3 Tabata set: forward lunge, high knees, lateral lunge (alternating), divider hop

  • Continuing to try to go easy on my left elbow, I used two handed bokken tonight and went through my requirements slow with no power, and focused on some of the key requirements that needed additional work.

  • All of the training has been causing some pain in my left elbow, tendinitis I am sure. Tonight I did all of my training with one handed bokken, and in general I’m going to try to go a little easier on my left arm. I went through my full requirements, looking in particular at Expert Blocks, Cutting Pattern 3, and The Raven, all items that the Saturday review indicated I should work on further.

  • Head Kaiden Gad led a special session to review requirements for myself, Kaiden Steelwind, and Kaiden Ravenstar. Most of my requirements were fine, no particular comments from Gad. Key notes, however:

Battle Stance – it is close to an L stance, but directed about 10 – 15 degrees off the line

Expert blocks – head (r/l), neck (r/l), adv. neck (r/l), decap (r/l), mid  (r/l – drop over outside of arms), leg (r/l), adv thrust, thrust, palmed head, grounded leg (r/l), adv. head (r/l)

Kata San – there will be some alterations based on recent elucidation from Kaiden Joseph, but no changes for me at this time

  • While visiting at the Hayward dojo, I took some time to solo train in the evening. I reviewed my requirements and then continued to work on my straight offense techniques. I also took a little time on non-stop chaining practiced moves.

  • 1 mile jog (w/dog) @ 10m43s (1538 steps)

  • 100 FCC, then a focus session on straight offense. Also took a little time to review some possible strategies for key opponents in Best of the Best.

  • 4×3 Tabata set: Leaping lunge, bicycle crunch, mountain climber, dead bug

  • 100 FCC to get warmed up (muscles-wise, it’s already about 80 degrees), then another focus session of high repetition of my straight offense moves.

  • Another focus session on my straight offense techniques, working to improve where I tend to be weak. In addition to my regular straight offense practiced moves, also working on an oblique movement with an inverted defensive face thrust (either side, though to my left lends to better movement).

Today was a long day, I spent 10 hours helping Risa move a two bedroom apartment to a house. I was, first and foremost, muscle and legs. I would definitely count it as endurance training.

  • No class yesterday and needed a break. Today I started with 100 FCC, then 25 gambit passes, spent a long while working on my straight offense moves, and then did another 100 FCC.

  • 4×3 Tabata set: pop squat (10lbs), medicine crunch (6lbs), high knees, plank extensions (6lbs)
