  • Class with Ivan. Standing Iai 1 – 5. Free Fighting 1 and 2. Some 4-attack parry and then unlimited parry.

  • Class with Hiroko and Ivan. We reviewed some of the changes noted by Jeremiah Sensei, going over Free Fighting Technique 2, Kneeling Iai 6, One Step 3, and Standing Iai 1.

  • Special session with Jeremiah Sensei, who was on travel in California and came to visit us. Hiroko, Ivan and myself were in attendance. Some others were invited, but none made it. We reviewed Standing Iai 1 – 8, One Steps 1 – 10, Free Fighting 1 – 2, and he instructed on Free Fighting 3 – 5 and the Jo Staff Kata, as well as the partner drills. At the end of the session, he granted Ivan his Green Belt rank, and surprised Hiroko and I with a rank of Brown Belt.

Partner Drills are a scenario based set of progressional attacks and counters. First the two partners determine the setting (against a wall or cliff, low ceilings, beach, etc), then they start with (step 1) a single (unblocked) technique, (step 2) an attack with evasion, (step 3) and attack with evasion and second attack, (step 4) an attack with evasion, and a second attack with a preemptive counter, and (step 5) an attack with evasion, followed by the start of a second attack with an attempt at preemptive counter that is its self blocked or preempted and a successful attack completed.

  • Class with Sal, Chris and Charlie. Joe called out, Steven observed. Stretch and requirements twice through. After the break, both to provide a extra breadth in experience, and to prep for the upcoming special session on Monday, I gave an introduction to the basic cuts and blocks in Myo Sim Kendo, and instructed on Kneeling Iai 1 and Standing Iai 1.

  • Class with Ivan. Discussed Kneeing Iai 1 – 5, reviewed Standing Iai 1 – 5 and One Step Techniques 1 – 4.

  • Class with Hiroko. I took this class to go over the Western Circle of Swordfighter’s basic cuts and blocks in order to contrast them with the Myo Sim Kendo cuts and blocks. I covered all basic full circle cuts (head, neck, decap, leg), basic thrust, and the corresponding blocks.

  • Class with Hiroko. 50 cuts to warm up, then standing iai 5 – 8. Switched to shinai and went through one step techniques 1 – 10.

  • Class with Ivan and Josh. Reviewed head and temple cuts and blocks, then instructed Josh on wrist and torso cuts and blocks, then covered Standing Iai 1.

  • Class with Hiroko. 50 cuts to warm up, then kneeling iai 5 and 8, followed by standing iai 5 and 6. We finished with some fast response drills, starting with going over the WCoS offensive-defense practiced moves Defense Cut and Tradition, then doing the equivalent of the Shotokan sanbon kumite where an attacker makes three attacks (we kept it to head or either temple), and the defender counter attacks on or after the third attack, the point being to work on our timing and experimenting with offensive-defense technique as well as timed straight offense combined with evasion.

  • Class with Ivan and Josh. Instructed Josh on kendo stance, head and temple strikes and blocks. Ivan and I went through Cutting Pattern 1 and 2 after Josh left.

  • Class with Ivan. 100 cuts, focus session on standing iai 1 – 5.

  • Class with Hiroko and Ivan. Ivan and I did 100 cuts to warm up, then Hiroko joined us and we went through one step techniques 1 – 7.

  • Class with Ivan. 100 cuts, Refined Strikes (a targeting, control and movement drill), then one step techniques 1 – 3.

  • No one else showed up for class, so I practiced my cuts and blocks on my own a bit and experimented with a couple combinations. Also tried out my new kendogi.

  • Special session with Hiroko, Ivan couldn’t make it. We warmed up with 50 cuts, some standing iai, and some one steps and free fighting techniques. We then video recorded each other performing all of our known techniques so we can send them to Master Shaw and Master DeBaun for review.

  • Class with Hiroko, Craig and Aaron. Craig has had long experience with another school of kendo, Aaron has had no experience. We spent the session going over the basics of holding the katana, offensive and defensive stance, and the cuts and blocks for head and temple.

  • Class with Hiroko and Ivan. One hundred cuts with iaito. Switched to shinai and did a new version of parry, with an aggressor, a defender, and a watcher. When “switch” is called, the roles rotate: watcher to aggressor, aggressor to defender, defender to watcher. I initially tried with the defender caller switch, then changed to having the watcher call switch.

  • Class with Ivan. Kneeling iai 1, Standing iai 1 – 8, One step techniques 1 – 4.

  • Class with Hiroko and Ivan. 100 continuous cuts. Standing iai 1 – 8. One step techniques 1, 2 and 4.

  • Class with Hiroko. One step techniques 1 – 6.

  • Class with Hiroko and Ivan. We went over our plan for the exhibition next week for the Redding School for the Arts II. We’ll start in seisa, triangle formation with Hiroko at point. She’ll doing kneeling iai 5, then Ivan and I will stand (with her) and Ivan will do standing iai 1, she’ll do standing 2, and I’ll do standing 7, after which Ivan and I will do one minute of 1-attack parry and one minute of 3-attack parry while Hiroko prepares for her Shotokan demonstration.

  • Class with Hiroko. Kneeling Iai 1 – 8. Free fighting techniques 1 and 2.

  • Class with Ivan. Kihon practice focused on blocks. We did three retreating blocks and an advancing counter strike back and forth across the room, then did a partner focus session on kote blocks.

  • Class with Ivan. Standing Iai 1 – 8 and One Steps 7 – 9.

  • Class with Hiroko and Ivan. Started with 100 cuts, then moved to Refined Strikes. We worked on Free Fighting Techniques 1 and 2 for the remainder.
