  • Class with Ivan, Mark and Dustin. Detail review of all cuts and blocks, as well as introducing Dustin to thrusts.

  • Class with Hiroko and Mark. Warmed up a little with a focus session on Standing Iai 1, then worked with shinai on the block-dash-advance that is in that iai. Finished with One Step Techniques 1, 2 and 3.

  • Special evening class with Hiroko, Ivan, Mark and Dustin. We worked through kihon cuts and blocks for Dustin and Mark, then Hiroko, Ivan and I got into protective gear and had a number of one on one matches.

  • Class with Hiroko, Ivan and Mark. Warmup with 100 cuts, then worked on standing iai 1. We finished with one step techniques 1 and 2.

  • Class with Ivan. One step technique 1 through 10, then finished with a few passes of the adapted Cutting Pattern 1.

  • Class with Hiroko and Ivan. Standing iai 1, 2, 4b, 6 and 8. A few rounds of single attack parry, then some attack/defend/observer three way parry.

  • Class with Hiroko. We did 100 cuts to warm up, then standing iai 1, 2, 4b, 6, and 8. We then switched to shinai and worked on one step techniques 9 and 10, and finished with one attack parry with a focus on flow and instinctual response.

  • Class with Ivan. First we did a few rounds of partner drills 1 – 5, then did some one attack parry and finished with some three attack parry.

  • Class with Hiroko. Kneeling iai 1 – 8, One step techniques 1 – 8.

  • Class with Hiroko and Ivan. 100 cuts with iato to warm up, then switched to shinai. Did a few rounds of Refined Strikes, then a few rounds of partner drills 1 – 5.

  • Class with Hiroko. We warmed up with 100 continuous cuts, then spent the rest of the time working on partner drills 1 – 5, trading back and forth on the initiator role.

  • I provided a solo demonstration of Myo Sim Kendo at Shasta College as part of a cultural awareness event. I introduced the differences between boken, shinai and iato and katana, and then demonstrated kneeling iai 1 and 5, and standing iai 1, 5 and 7. As a solo demonstration, I was unable to go through any partner drills.

  • Performed a demonstration of Myo Sim Kendo at the Shasta Mall as part of a cultural awareness exhibition. Hiroko, Ivan and I performed a few iai and demonstrated parry (1, 3, and open attack variations).

  • Class with Hiroko, Ivan and Mark. Standing Iai 1, 5 and 6, gone through in detail for Mark’s benefit.

  • Class with Hiroko, Ivan and Mark. Mark has done another kendo school over a decade ago. His work schedule won’t permit training often, but he should be around. We went over basic stance, defensive posture, cuts to head (men), temple, wrist (kote) and waist (do), and blocking the head before we ran out of time.

  • Class with Ivan. Standing Iai 1 – 8. One step techniques 1 – 6.

  • Class with Hiroko and Ivan. Standing Iai 5, 6 and 8. Advanced parry with defender/attacker/observer role rotation. Open parry with role switch when the attacker pauses.

  • Class with Hiroko and Ivan. Hiroko and I warmed up with kneeling iai 1, 2 and 5, then Ivan joined us and we finished with standing iai 1, 2 and 6. We then switched to shinai and went over partner drills 1 – 6 for the remaining time.

  • Class with Hiroko. A few kihon block/counter combos to warm up, then four times through the partner drill exercises 1 – 6, and finished with 3 attack parry and open parry.

  • Class with Ivan. Started with some kihon drills. Head block followed by two alternate side temple strikes, then do block followed by thrust, temple, do strike. Switched to shinai and worked partner drills 1 – 6 four times through (two each as initiating attacker). Finished with some 3 attack parry, then open parry.

  • Class with Hiroko. We did 100 cuts to warm up, then standing iai 1, 2, 3, 4b, and 5. We finished with one steps 1, 2, 3 and 4.

  • Class with Hiroko. 50 continuous cuts, then standing iai 1, 2, 3, and 5 to warm up. Followed with one step techniques 1 – 5.

  • Class with Ivan. A few kihon passes doing one block followed by three attacks, then one steps 1 – 5.

  • Class with Ivan. Standing Iai 1, 2, 4b. Partner exercises 1 – 6.

  • Class with Hiroko and Ivan. We started with kihon practice, doing each of our cuts down and back across the gym, including thrusts. We then worked on combinations, myself creating two, then one each from Hiroko and Ivan.
