  • I hosted a Day of Combat at the Mt Hood White River East SnoPark at 4200ft elevation. It was a just about as perfect as it gets, with mostly overcast and a fresh couple inches of snow from the night before on top of a deep base. The around 20F degree temp meant no rain, just some occasional light snow flurries.

Sparring participants were myself, Honorary Kaiden Dalton, Jesse B, Ferocitas, Bryce, Rakta Nadi, Chris, Miriam, and Aaliyah. Anne was an immense help in support capacity, logging matches and helping with gear.

    All sparring was bokken.

We logged 9 last-standing melees, a couple 3v3v3 team melees, a 3v5 upper vs lower melee, a 4v5 with trainees as captains, and a 4v5 VIP protection melee (myself and dalton as non-combat VIPs).

We wrapped up with 45 1-on-1 matches (best-of-3 format).

  • Class with Chris, Miriam, Ben, and Shamay. Stretch and requirements. I worked with each student individually: discussed the 6 traditions with Shamay and added decap and leg cuts; reviewed basic cuts and blocks with Ben; then same with Miriam; and reviewed kata ichi and cutting pattern 2 with Chris. As a class we drilled on Jumping Tiger 2, a new move for Shamay.

During the break I scattered obstructions throughout the dojo and we started the second half with altered terrain combat movement, then 100 full circle cuts (mine 2H steel) in the altered terrain. I shifted everything closer and we then did The Ground is Lava balance 1, and we finished with more continuous full circle cuts with the obstructions as an obstacle course (i.e. no touching them at all) (I got in another 50 cuts with steel for the final round).

  • Class with Bryce and Rakta Nadi. Stretch and their requirements (twice for each of them, one with me, one solo). Focus session on Thorn, discussing the elements of evasion, control of measure/ma, and timing. After the break, combat movement in Altered Terrain, followed by 100 Full Circle Cuts in Altered Terrain (myself with steel), and lastly a couple rounds of Refined Strikes (against the targets) in Altered Terrain.

  • Class with Sal, Steven, Elijah, Dalton, Michael and Caleb. Tonight was a special sparring field trip. We gathered at the Redding Dojo and then traveled to a near by open space that I had identified. We hiked in a short distance with our gear, armored up, and had a total of 60 one on one matches in altered terrain by the light of just three small torches.
Due to the location, Sal and I used bokken tonight.

  • Class with Sal, Steven, Elijah and Dalton. Datlon finished up his first boken before class (he’s been coming early the past four classes or so to make his boken). Stretch and requirements initially, then I reviewed The Illusion (a new move for Elijah and Dalton). After the break, we had 27 one on one matches.

Conditions: Muddy with intermittent light rain.

  • Class with Sal, Steven, Joshua and Jesse. Charlie observed due to personal injury, Chris called out. Stretch and requirements once through, then I went over Jumping Tiger 1 (a new move for Joshua and Jesse). After a break, we had one on one sparring in the rain and mud (altered terrain, all weather).
