Training Journal

A journal of my martial arts training

  • Class with Sal, Steven and Jesse B. Stretch and requirements, then a break. After the break, we did add-on for a bit, then finished with 360 machinegun drill (i.e. opponents on all sides).

  • I journeyed to the Half Moon Bay Dojo for the 2012 Best of the Best tournament. I achieved a 68% victory rate, which did not place, but I fought cleanly and was happy enough with my performance.

  • Special outdoor practice at Dan’s property today. We started at 8am with class stretch, then Brad had us doing kihon up and down the vineyard rows. After a break, we did some kibidachi oi tsuki, then a 30 minutes kibidachi. After another break, we finished with some self defense kumite, working first with group attacks, then with armed attackers (knives, bats, etc).

  • Class led by Brad.

  • Class with Sal, Steven, Joshua, Jesse A, Jesse B and Elijah observed due to ankle injury. Requirements and a break. During the break, Sal and I did some steel parry and centered cuts. After the break, we paired off and did the Myo Sim partner drills 1 – 5 (attack, attack/block/counter, attack/block/attack, attack/block/preempt, attack/block/preempt/block/counter). We finished with balance 1 and 2.

  • Class with Mark, Chris and Dustin. Review of basic cuts, then worked on Standing Iai 1 a bit.

  • Class led by Brad. Stretch. Slow sanpon kumite focusing on straight back evasion and good distance. Ended with Empi.

  • Class with Hiroko, Ivan and Mark. Started with 100 cuts, then standing iai 1 – 3. Finished with One Step Techniques 1 – 3.

  • Class with Sal, Steven, Elijah and Jesse B. Mark H. (from kendo and karate) observed and may join at a future date. Stretch and requirements one through. After the break, we had one on one matches (Jesse logged). I tried out my new shield tonight for some of the matches.

  • Class with Mark and Chris. Went over cuts, blocks, and standing iai 1.

  • Class led by Brad. Stretch including a number of back, front and side lunges (think Bulgarian squats) and 20 pushups. Then we did some kumite gyaku zuki and mai te review, focusing on light, fast technique. We paired off and worked on blocking the mai te while making a gyaku zuki same time, then got bags and worked on front leg yoko gerri kokome. We finished with taking a look at moving in on a mwashagerri to catch it and sweep or throw the opponent.

  • Class with Hiroko, Ivan and Mark, and Chris showed up late. Warmed up with 100 cuts, followed by review of Standing Iai 1 through 3, then spent time going through all the basic cuts including thrust, performing them advancing down the length of the gym and back again.

  • Class with Sal, Steven, Joshua, Elijah and Jesse B. Stretch and requirements (once through for Sal and I, twice for the other four). We took a break, during which Sal and I did steel Refined Strikes and Cutting Pattern 2, then in the second half I started with a new drill where we stood in a loose circle and every other person was designated attack left, block right, and the alternates were block right, attack left. On the count, we went back and forth, attacking any target, the blocking the incoming attack. Next we split into two groups of three and did defend/attack/observe parry. We finished with a round of three-upper-attack machine gun drill.

  • Class with Hiroko and Mark. Loosened up with Standing Iai 1 and 2, then worked on the Jo kata.

  • Class led by Brad. Oi Zuki kihon along with some combinations (mae gerri/mai te, mae gerri/oi zuki, mawashi gerri/yoko gerri kokome, mawashi gerri/spinning back kick). Followed with mah practice using these combos.

  • Class with Mark. We loosened up with Standing Iai 1, then switched to shinai and went over One Step Techniques 1 through 4.

  • Class with Joshua, Steven, and Elijah. Stretch followed by requirements. I reviewed Elijah in full while the other two worked together. Took a break to armor up, then had 27 one on one matches.

  • Class with Ivan, Mark and Dustin. Detail review of all cuts and blocks, as well as introducing Dustin to thrusts.

  • Class led by Brad. We started with an in depth analysis of our oi zuki, using partners with bags to push into our static form, then doing slow chudan mai te and then full oi zuki into the bags. Next we worked with partners on maintaining a close mah as they attack (sanpon kumite style), and at the end of class we did a similar drill where we put our palms just shy of our opponents’ and moved forward and back maintaining a constant distance.
Additionally, we practiced Taikyoko Shodan several times through and Heian Shodan a couple times, with the admonishment to go slow and have the same feeling as when we were working with our partners on the oi zuki focus.

  • Class with Hiroko and Mark. Warmed up a little with a focus session on Standing Iai 1, then worked with shinai on the block-dash-advance that is in that iai. Finished with One Step Techniques 1, 2 and 3.

  • Class with Sal, Steven and Jesse B. Stretch, then a focus session on Jumping Tiger 1 (a new move for Jesse). Followed with requirements, myself reviewing Steven to check his progress toward White Rope. After a break, Sal and I did worked briefly with steel, choosing three of our practiced moves to go over, then the main class resumed with some advanced response training, followed by refined strikes, and finishing with machine gun drill at half-ish speed, two attacks for any target (and Sal and I were permitted one counter attack).

  • Special evening class with Hiroko, Ivan, Mark and Dustin. We worked through kihon cuts and blocks for Dustin and Mark, then Hiroko, Ivan and I got into protective gear and had a number of one on one matches.

  • Class led by Brad. Focus on oi zuki. Worked with the bags, then on footwork, and then with partners. Finished with Taikioko Shodan.

  • Class with Hiroko, Ivan and Mark. Warmup with 100 cuts, then worked on standing iai 1. We finished with one step techniques 1 and 2.

  • Class with Sal, Joshua and Jesse. Stretch and requirements the first half, then we armored up and had 24 one on one matches for the second half.
